The Three County Borders Group is a local group of the Christians in Science organisation. CiS is an international network of those concerned with the relationship between science and Christian faith, open to scientists, teachers, students and all those with an interest in this dialogue. Although CiS is primarily a professional group, aimed at those associated with science, technology and engineering, a significant proportion of its members are not scientists and CiS welcomes into membership anyone with an interest in science and faith. Why Christians in Science? The common misperception that there is always conflict between science and faith can be abused by those with anti-Christian or anti-science agendas. In reality science and Christian faith have always been ‘first cousins’ and committed Christians have played key role in the emergence of modern science, such as Robert Boyle FRS, a founder of modern chemistry and Michael Faraday FRS whose discoveries in electromagnetism have transformed the world today. Today this tradition of Christian involvement in the sciences continues in the lives of scientists such as Francis Collins who led the project to sequence the human genome as Director of the National Genome Research Institute (1993-2008) and Sir John Houghton, co-chair of the Nobel Peace Prize winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (1988-2002). As an affiliated local group, The Three County Borders Group shares the following aims of CiS: Science and Faith To develop and promote biblical Christian views on the nature, scope and limitations of science, and on the interaction between science and faith. To bring biblical Christian thought on scientific issues into the public arena. Faith and Work To encourage Christians who are engaged in scientific work to maintain an active faith and to apply it in their professional lives. To communicate the Christian gospel within the scientific community Faith and the Environment To stimulate responsible Christian attitudes and action towards care for the environment. CiS provides support and resources for Christians in the sciences, and more widely helps people find answers to their questions, and encourages informed debate on science-faith issues. Its journal Science and Christian Belief is sent to all members in April and October each year. A newsletter is sent several times during the year and includes articles and information about forthcoming events, conferences, and publications. The CiS annual day conference is held each autumn, usually in London. A Northern day conference has been held in early spring since 2003. For more information visit
